During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, equipped with a camera and light, is gently inserted through the mouth into the upper digestive tract. The high-definition images allow the gastroenterologist to visualise the lining of these organs in real time. If needed, small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken or therapeutic interventions—such as stopping bleeding or removing small growths—can be performed simultaneously.
