Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical intervention that aims to alleviate the symptoms associated with movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and selected psychiatric disorders. This neurosurgical procedure involves placing thin electrodes in preselected locations in the brain. The thin wires are then passed under the skin to a small electrical device (neurostimulator) placed within the chest wall, which powers the electrodes. The electrodes provide controlled electrical impulses to regulate abnormal activity in the brain.
While DBS does not directly treat the underlying disease or disorder, it can decrease tremors, stiffness and rigidity and abnormal movements and assist patients to take control over their symptoms and regain independence. DBS is customizable, reversible, and can be adjusted to meet the unique needs of each patient. DBS is indicated in the setting of uncontrolled symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, tremor, or dystonia. DBS reduces symptoms such as severe tremors, stiffness, and slowness with movement. For many of our patients, DBS allows them to regain the independence to function day-to-day.
DBS can lead to improvements in tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement, or involuntary contractions of the muscles. Most patients experience improved ability to move smoothly, decreased need for medication, and, in many cases, fewer side effects. The extent of improvement varies depending on condition, but it is common for patients to have better quality of life, regain independence, and increase daily activity level.
Risks include infection, bleeding, malfunction of hardware, or temporary side effects such as tingling, muscle contraction, or mood changes. Severe complications are uncommon and the procedure is considered safe, particularly if performed by an experienced neurosurgical team.
The majority of patients are hospitalized for two or three days. The total recovery time of your brain will likely take several weeks as it heals and you get settings reprogrammed on multiple appointment times. Patients often may improperly start returning to normal activities after a few weeks and feel more improvements after the physician adjusts the settings.
Battery life for the standard battery is typically in the range of 3 to 5 years with the rechargeable battery often lasting 10–15 years. Once the battery is low, we can get you scheduled for a simple outpatient procedure. You will come back to the office each year to obtain follow-up appointments to ensure the device is functioning optimally.
