FAQ's Related to Reconstructive Surgeon

What is a Breast Reconstructive Surgeon?

A Breast Reconstructive Surgeon is a physician who specialises in restoring the shape, symmetry, and appearance of breast tissue after mastectomy, lumpectomy, traumatic injury, or congenital deformity. The surgeon can stabilise, reconstruct and sculpt a breast using implants, flaps or fat grafting to achieve a natural look in breast reconstruction.

When is breast reconstruction usually performed?

Breast reconstruction can be performed at the same time as a mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or subsequently to the treatment of cancer (delayed reconstruction). The timing of the reconstruction will depend on your treatment plan, comorbid conditions, and patient preference.

What are the more commonly performed reconstruction approaches?

The more commonly performed approaches include:

  • Implant-based reconstruction (saline/silicone or ADM, with or without support)
  • Autologous flap reconstruction (TRAM, DIEP, Latissimus Dorsi, TUG, PAP)
  • Fat grafting for contouring
  • Nipple–areola complex reconstruction and 3D tattooing
How do you decide between implant-based reconstruction and autologous reconstruction?

The decision will be based on oncologic factors, patient body habitus, comorbid conditions, any adjunct craniofacial therapies, patient preferences and potential mid-term and long-term outcomes. The ultimate breast reconstruction plan is established in coordination with the multidisciplinary team.
