Dr Jacob Lavee is a cardiac surgeon with 27 years of experience working at the Sheba Medical Centre, Tel Hashomer, Israel. He is also the Director, Heart Transplantation Unit at the same hospital. In 1997 Prof. Lavee implanted the first left Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) in Israel (HeartMate, Thoratec) and since then has become a national authority in the management of such cardiac patients. Dr Lavee has numerous publications in his name on topics such as management of bleeding problems in patients undergoing open-heart operations and heads a research on a novel technique to prolong preservation of donor hearts for transplantation, utilizing antifreeze proteins derived from the blood of arctic fish.
