Uterine Cancer Treatment: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Uterine cancer originates in the endometrium(cells that form the uterus lining), the lining of the uterus, and persists for a medium-term duration. Stage IV represents the most advanced and extensive form of the disease. Diagnosis involves medical evaluation supported by laboratory tests and imaging studies such as pelvic exams, pap tests, ultrasounds, biopsies, and occasionally CT or MRI scans.

The main uterine cancer treatment is surgery which removes the uterus and is called a Hysterectomy. Treatment options depend on the stage of uterine cancer. In advanced cases, chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be necessary.

The following are various signs and symptoms of uterine cancer such as

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain with urination and/or sex
  • Pelvic pains

Before uterine cancer develops, there may be some signs and symptoms to watch for:

  • Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Changes in Urination or Bowel Habits
  • Pelvic Mass or Lump
  • Unexplained Weight Loss
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal Swelling
  • Back Pain

To confirm a diagnosis of uterine cancer, your healthcare provider may conduct various tests:

Blood tests:

  • CA-125 assay: Measures levels of the protein CA-125, which can indicate the presence of cancer.

Imaging tests:

  • CT scans: Produce detailed images of the body's internal structures.
  • MRI scans: Use radio waves and a strong magnet to create detailed images.
  • Transvaginal ultrasound: Involves inserting a probe into the vagina to visualize the uterus.

Other tests:

  • Endometrial biopsy: Involves sampling tissue from the lining of the uterus.
  • Hysteroscopy: Uses a thin tube with a camera to examine the uterus.
  • Dilation and curettage (D&C): A surgical procedure to remove uterine tissue, usually performed in an operating room.

Following uterine surgery, patients stay in the hospital briefly for monitoring and pain management. Early mobility and gentle activity are encouraged to prevent complications. Wound care instructions are provided to promote healing, and patients are advised to resume normal activities gradually.

Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor progress, and emotional support may be beneficial during recovery.

A recommended post-cancer treatment rehabilitation plan must include:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Pain Management
  • Nutritional Planning
  • Emotional Counselling
