Appendectomy: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

An appendectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the appendix when it becomes infected, a condition known as appendicitis. This surgery is a common emergency intervention.

The appendix is a narrow pouch connected to the large intestine, located in the lower right area of the abdomen. Prompt removal of the appendix is necessary in cases of appendicitis to prevent rupture, which can lead to a serious medical emergency.

An appendectomy can be performed through either laparoscopic or open surgery methods. Complications may occur if the appendix has ruptured, potentially prolonging recovery time. In such cases, a drain may be inserted into the incision post-surgery for several days to facilitate

The signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for an appendectomy include:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Fever
  • Constipation or Diarrhea
  • Swelling and Tenderness
  • Difficulty Passing Gas

Before undergoing an appendectomy, several diagnostic tests may be performed to confirm the presence of appendicitis and assess the need for surgery. These tests may include:

  • Physical Examination: The doctor will assess the patient's symptoms, and medical history, and perform a physical examination, focusing on the abdomen's tenderness and signs of inflammation.
  • Blood Tests
  • Urinalysis
  • Ultrasound
  • CT Scan
  • Diagnostic tests

Following surgery, you'll be monitored in the recovery room until vital signs stabilize. Depending on the procedure and anesthesia, once alert and stable, you'll be transferred to your hospital room or discharged if it's an outpatient laparoscopic appendectomy. Pain medication will be provided through prescription or intravenously, and you may have a nasogastric tube for stomach fluid drainage. Mobilization typically begins soon after surgery, and a gradual return to eating and drinking is initiated. A follow-up appointment is scheduled 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery.

At home, try to keep the incision clean and dry, following your doctor's instructions. Stitches or staples will be removed during a follow-up, while adhesive strips should stay dry and will likely come off on their own. Manage discomfort with prescribed pain medication, avoiding aspirin. If you had laparoscopic surgery, expect temporary discomfort from residual gas and gradually resume light activity as advised by your provider, awaiting clearance for a full return to work and normal activities.
