What is Gastritis?

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining, or gastric mucosa. It may develop suddenly (acute gastritis) or persist longer (chronic gastritis). Gastritis and gastropathy are related but different conditions: gastritis involves inflammation, whereas gastropathy refers to damage to the stomach lining with little or no inflammation.

What is the Importance of Timely Treatment?

Timely diagnosis and treatment can help relieve symptoms and prevent complications. Persistent H. pylori infection can contribute to peptic ulcers, atrophic gastritis and an increased risk of certain stomach cancers. Some forms of gastritis, particularly autoimmune gastritis, may also interfere with iron and vitamin B12 absorption and contribute to anemia. Gastritis that causes bleeding requires prompt medical evaluation. Warning signs include black or tarry stools, blood in the stool, vomiting blood or vomit resembling coffee grounds, dizziness and unusual weakness.

What are the Common Symptoms of Gastritis?

  • Upper abdominal pain, discomfort or burning
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Feeling full soon after starting a meal
  • Uncomfortable fullness after eating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Indigestion
  • Unintentional weight loss in some cases
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding in more severe cases

Causes and Risk Factors of Gastritis

Causes

  • H. pylori infection: A major cause of chronic gastritis.
  • NSAID use: Long-term use of medicines such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen can damage the stomach lining.
  • Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can irritate and damage the stomach lining.
  • Autoimmune gastritis: The immune system attacks cells in the stomach lining.
  • Bile reflux: Bile flowing back into the stomach can irritate the gastric lining.
  • Severe physical stress: Critical illness, severe burns, major injuries or sepsis can contribute to stress-related erosive gastropathy.
  • Certain treatments: Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may sometimes affect the stomach lining.
  • Other diseases: Conditions such as Crohn's disease and certain infections can occasionally be associated with gastritis or gastropathy.

Latest Research and Technologies in the Treatment of Gastritis in India

  • Modern evaluation of gastritis increasingly focuses on identifying the underlying cause, particularly H. pylori infection, rather than treating symptoms alone. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy can help visualize the stomach lining, identify erosions or ulcers and obtain tissue for pathological examination or H. pylori-related testing. Non-invasive options such as urea breath testing and stool antigen testing can also detect H. pylori.

Treatment options for Gastritis

Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy : It is also known as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is the gold standard procedure for evaluating, diagnosing, and managing gastritis. While a clinical history can point toward stomach inflammation, a UGI endoscopy allows a gastroenterologist to directly visualize the stomach lining and collect tissue samples for confirmation.

  • Clinical assessment:
    • Medical History and Symptom Review: The doctor evaluates abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, appetite changes, and other symptoms, along with their duration and severity.
    • Medication Review: The use of NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen is assessed because prolonged use can irritate and damage the stomach lining.
    • Physical Examination: The physician may examine the abdomen for tenderness, discomfort, or other signs that could indicate gastritis or another digestive condition.
    • Assessment for Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Symptoms such as black stools, vomiting blood, dizziness, or weakness may prompt evaluation for stomach or intestinal bleeding.
    • Assessment of Nutritional Deficiencies: Blood tests may be recommended when chronic gastritis is suspected, particularly to identify anemia or vitamin B12 and iron deficiencies.
  • Imaging Tests:
    • H. pylori Stool Antigen Test: This test detects H. pylori proteins in a stool sample and can help diagnose active infection.
    • Urea Breath Test: The patient drinks a urea-containing solution, and the test detects substances produced when H. pylori breaks down urea in the stomach.
    • Blood Tests: Blood tests may help identify anemia, iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, or other abnormalities associated with certain types of gastritis.
    • Stool Occult Blood Test: This test detects small amounts of blood in stool that may not be visible, helping identify possible gastrointestinal bleeding.
    • Additional Laboratory Tests: Depending on the suspected cause, doctors may recommend tests for autoimmune antibodies, nutritional deficiencies, or other underlying conditions.
  • Medicines used for gastritis depend on the underlying cause and may include: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2-receptor blockers, Antibiotics for confirmed H. pylori infection, Bismuth-containing medicines as part of selected H. pylori treatment regimens, Vonoprazan or other appropriate acid-suppressing therapy in selected patients, and Iron or vitamin B12 supplementation when deficiencies are associated with gastritis. Patients should not start or stop antibiotics or long-term acid-suppressing medicines without medical advice. Completing the prescribed H. pylori treatment is particularly important because incomplete treatment can contribute to persistent infection and antibiotic resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recovery depends on the type and cause of gastritis. Symptoms from temporary irritation may improve relatively quickly after you remove the trigger and start treatment. H. pylori gastritis requires a complete eradication regimen followed by testing to confirm that the infection has been cleared. Chronic or autoimmune gastritis may require longer-term monitoring and management.

Yes. Gastritis generally does not prevent normal walking or physical activity. However, people experiencing significant abdominal discomfort, vomiting, weakness, dizziness or bleeding should rest and seek medical advice. Severe dizziness, weakness or signs of gastrointestinal bleeding require prompt medical attention.

Many Indian hospitals have gastroenterology departments equipped for diagnostic endoscopy, biopsy, pathology, H. pylori testing and management of gastrointestinal bleeding. Some centres may also have advanced endoscopic imaging and emerging AI-assisted endoscopy technologies. Availability varies between hospitals.

Many hospitals and medical centres in India have dedicated international-patient services. Depending on the provider, these may include medical record coordination, appointments, interpreter assistance, airport transfers, accommodation support and assistance with treatment-related logistics.

Consider the gastroenterologist's experience with your specific condition, the hospital's gastroenterology and endoscopy facilities, availability of pathology and H. pylori testing, multidisciplinary support and experience treating international patients. For complex or recurrent gastritis, reviewing previous endoscopy, biopsy and treatment records with a gastroenterologist can help determine the appropriate next step.

There is no single success rate for gastritis treatment in India because gastritis includes several conditions with different causes and treatment responses. Outcomes depend on whether the condition is related to H. pylori, medicines, autoimmune disease, alcohol, bile reflux or another cause.

India has gastroenterologists who diagnose and manage gastritis, H. pylori infection, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding and other digestive disorders. When choosing a specialist, patients should review relevant qualifications, gastroenterology experience, endoscopy expertise and the hospital's available diagnostic facilities.

Risks depend on the treatment used. Antibiotics can cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea or allergic reactions. Acid-suppressing medicines may have potential adverse effects, particularly with prolonged use. Endoscopy is generally safe but can carry risks such as bleeding, infection or reactions to sedation. The treating physician should explain procedure-specific risks based on the patient's condition.

Follow the treatment plan provided by your doctor and avoid known irritants such as alcohol and unnecessary NSAID use. If H. pylori is diagnosed, complete the prescribed eradication therapy and undergo follow-up testing when recommended. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop vomiting blood, coffee-ground-like vomit, black stools, severe weakness or dizziness.

No. Gastritis does not typically cause physical deformities. However, certain forms of chronic gastritis can cause long-term changes to the stomach lining and may increase the risk of complications such as anemia, atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcers or, in some cases, stomach cancer.

Yes. Persistent abdominal discomfort, nausea, indigestion, appetite changes and dietary concerns can interfere with daily activities, sleep, work and social life. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause can help control symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.

Some forms of untreated gastritis can have long-term consequences. Persistent H. pylori infection can contribute to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers and atrophic changes in the stomach lining. Autoimmune gastritis may contribute to iron and vitamin B12 deficiency. Certain chronic forms are also associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer.

Prevention depends on the underlying cause. Measures may include avoiding unnecessary NSAID use, limiting alcohol, following medical advice for H. pylori treatment and completing the prescribed course of therapy. Patients with recurrent symptoms should undergo appropriate evaluation rather than repeatedly self-treating with acid-suppressing medicines.

Yes. Risk varies according to the type of gastritis. H. pylori infection is more common in some populations and geographic regions, while reactive gastropathy is more likely in people who regularly use NSAIDs. Autoimmune gastritis is more common among people with certain autoimmune conditions.
