Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure primarily used to treat achalasia, a disorder in which the lower esophageal sphincter does not relax properly and the esophagus has difficulty moving food into the stomach. During POEM, an endoscope is introduced through the mouth and used to create a small tunnel within the esophageal wall. The abnormal muscle fibers are then divided to improve the passage of food into the stomach.
