Foraminotomy is a decompression procedure that enlarges the intervertebral foramen, the opening through which a spinal nerve exits the vertebral column. It may be performed when bone spurs, disc changes, or other tissues narrow this passage and compress the nerve root. During surgery, the surgeon removes a small amount of bone or other compressive tissue to create additional space around the nerve. Depending on the location and underlying condition, the procedure may be performed in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine.
