Ileoanal Anastomosis (J-Pouch) Surgery works by creating a reservoir from the terminal ileum after removal of the colon and rectum. The newly formed pouch is connected to the anus, allowing stool to pass through the natural bowel outlet. Depending on the patient's condition and surgical plan, a temporary diverting ileostomy may be created to protect the newly constructed pouch while it heals and may later be reversed.
