Total Colectomy is a surgical procedure in which the entire colon is removed while the rectum is generally left in place. It may be recommended for conditions such as severe ulcerative colitis, familial adenomatous polyposis, certain colorectal cancers, or other serious diseases affecting the colon. After the colon is removed, the surgeon may reconnect the small intestine to the rectum when appropriate or create an ileostomy to divert stool through an opening in the abdominal wall. The reconstruction method depends on the patient's condition and surgical requirements.
