You may consider seeing a surgical oncologist if you have been diagnosed with cancer and/or a suspicious tumor or growth that may require surgical excision. Surgical oncologists also perform all surgical biopsy procedures and manage any complex and/or advanced cancers.
The surgical oncologist manages a broad range of cancers, including breast cancer, head and neck cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreas cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, gynecological cancers, and soft tissue tumors (e.g. sarcomas).
They are usually part of a multi-disciplinary team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to develop a unique treatment plan for each patient.
Not all cancers can be treated surgically, as some tumors or cancers can be treated by chemotherapy, radiation and/or targeted therapy as standalone treatments. The surgical oncologist would advise the patient based on the specific type of cancer, stage of disease, health and other factors, if surgery is the best treatment option.
Surgical oncologists perform open and minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic or robotic) for the removal of tumors, reconstruction of surgical sites, and palliation of symptoms of cancer.
