Cornea Transplant

Cornea transplant surgery is also known as keratoplasty. It is a common surgery and has a good amount of success rate as well. Cornea transplant is required for people who have their corneal tissue damaged due to scarring or bruises. This affects the normal vision, which cannot be further corrected with the help of lens or medication. The cornea can swell thus resulting in distorted vision and it can grow painful, thus destroying the tissue gradually.

The following are some of the reasons why cornea replacement surgery may be required:

  • Failure of the cornea due to a cataract surgery complication
  • Rejection of the graft following a previously done cornea transplant surgery
  • Edema or swelling formed in the cornea
  • Chemical burns as a result of some accident or injury to the eye
  • Complications resulting as a result of LASIK surgery (rare)
  • The irregular shape of the cornea and subsequent thinning of the cornea (due to a disease named keratoconus)
  • In case of any disease of the eye

Cornea transplant surgery involves the replacement of the diseased cornea with a healthy cornea from a donor and it is performed commonly. However, there are some risks of rejection that would always be there. A corneal transplant is a surgery conducted to replace the cornea with a tissue retrieved from a donor. It is one of the most common types of transplants done. The cornea mainly comprises of five layers and it is not always necessary that all the layers are transplanted during the surgery.

In case of full thickness cornea transplant, all the 5 layers of the recipient are replaced with the healthy corneal layers of the donor. Lamellar cornea transplant includes only transplanting some of the layers of a donor’s cornea in the recipient patient’s corneal layers. The layers that are transplanted in this kind of surgery may include the deepest layer, which is known as the endothelium and this is generally known as the posterior lamellar cornea transplant. Some of the included procedures of this type of transplant include Descemet’s Stripping Automated

Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) or Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK). It may also have layers nearer to the surface included, which is referred as anterior lamellar cornea transplant. When only a portion of the cornea is diseased and not the entire cornea, then the lamellar transplants appears to be much more suitable compared to a full penetrating transplant.

LASIK

Lasik surgery is one of the most popular procedures for correction vision. For problems like astigmatism, myopia, and hypermetropia, Lasik offers a near-permanent solution thereby restoring healthy vision to the suffering individual. Abbreviated from Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, LASIK is a laser-assisted eye surgery that implements microkeratomes for the improvement of visual acuity. The laser is targeted at the cornea, which is re-adjusted or reshaped so as to provide unaided vision to the candidates. Lasik treatment is very popular owing to its remarkable success rates, which is why, approximately 700,000 procedures are performed annually.

Macular Degeneration Surgery

What is macula and macular degeneration?

Macula is the yellowish oval area surrounding the retina of the eye, and it is the finest part where images are received. Degeneration of the macula occurs mostly at the age of 60, and hence, it is termed as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Patients experiencing macular degeneration may not experience total blindness, but they may lose most of their central vision. The symptoms observed in this condition are the need for brighter light while reading, difficulty recognizing faces, decreased intensity of colors, etc.

Macular degeneration is mainly associated with aging. However, other factors such as smoking, hereditary, sedentary life style also cause macular degeneration.

What are the types of macular degeneration?

There are two types of macular degeneration. Each have different macular degeneration symptoms and are diagnosed with the help og macular degeneration test.

Dry AMD- It is the most common form of eye disease, and it is the early-intermediate stage of macular degeneration. The patients may experience slight vision changes; however, they may not notice the symptoms.

Wet AMD- It is the most severe form of macular degeneration that leads to complete vision loss. This occurs due to abnormal growth of blood vessels beneath retina and macula which leads to the destruction of healthy cells. It is proved that nearly 10% of people with macular degeneration have this type of AMD. If you have Wet AMD, macular degeneration symptoms may include seeing wavy lines, or dark spots throughout the day.

Juvenile MD- In some cases, macular degeneration can also affect young people, a condition called as juvenile macular degeneration. Scarring of macula is seen in such patients.

Vitrectomy

There can be a number of eye-related problems that can be resolved through a retina surgery or a vitrectomy, which is a kind of eye surgery. Vitrectomy is conducted to rectify a range of eye problems. However, it is not as common and simple as a cataract surgery. As the names suggest, vitrectomy or retina surgery aims at correcting a number of defects pertaining specifically to the vitreous and the retina of the eye.

Some of the problems that demand vitrectomy include age-related macular degeneration, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, retinal detachment or retinal tear, diabetic retinopathy, and vitreous hemorrhage, wherein bleeding occurs and the blood does not get cleared by natural healing process of the body.

The symptoms of the above-enlisted problems may include the following:

  • Acute pain in the eye
  • Diminishing vision problems
  • Redness in the whites of the eye
  • Flashes of light changing the eye & vision
  • Swelling and discharge from the eyes

With the help of conventional surgery or laser vitrectomy is performed very deep inside the eye. The surgery takes place near retina, the light-sensitive membranous part of the eye and the gel- like vitreous is present. It may be required by patients who have developed some unwanted side effects after cataract surgery is performed.
