OB designates obstetrics, and "GYN" designates gynecology. An OB-GYN offers complete healthcare services for women, including a range of obstetric and gynecological care. They offer preventative and surgical treatment of women’s reproductive health, as well.

You should visit an OB-GYN for:

• Standard, routine gynecological examinations and Pap smears
• Prenatal visits and post-partum visits
• Menstrual irregularity disturbances or pelvic pain
• Fertility concerns
• Gynecologic disorders with infection or hormonal imbalance

OB-GYNs treat:

• Pregnancy and high-risk pregnancies
• Infertility and reproductive endocrine disorders

OB-GYNs perform:

• Laparoscopic and minimally invasive gynecological procedures

An OB-GYN is a certified physician trained to manage complicated obstetric and gynecologic conditions, perform surgery, and take care of high-risk pregnancies. Midwives typically provide routine care during a pregnancy and labor, and mostly work in low-risk settings. They are not trained to perform surgery or manage complex medical care.
