A Hemato-Oncologist is a medical professional who treats and diagnoses patients with blood cancers and complex blood disorders (e.g. Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma, Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Aplastic Anaemia, Thalassemia) using a variety of medical therapies and/or procedures, including but not limited to: Chemotherapy; Immunotherapy; Targeted Therapy (Targeted Chemotherapy) and/or Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT).

Patients are usually referred to a Hemato-Oncologist when their blood test results, the results of the initial Bone Marrow Study (BMS), and/or symptoms suggest that they have a blood cancer or serious Blood Disorder that requires specialised care.

Blood cancers can be diagnosed through a combination of Blood Tests, BMS, Immunophenotyping, Cytogenetic and/or Molecular Tests, and Imaging Tests. Diagnosis involves determining the Type of Disease and its stage.
