A Hemato-Oncologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats diseases involving blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic systems, as well as types of cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. They treat both benign and malignant blood disorders with medical therapies, chemotherapy, and advanced cell therapies.
A Hemato-Oncologist treats conditions such as anemia, hemophilia, clotting disorders, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, bone marrow failure, and other cancers of the blood and lymphatic systems.
You should see a Hemato-Oncologist if you have fatigue that cannot be explained, frequent infections, bleeding that is prolonged or difficult to stop, unexplained weight loss, fever that cannot be accounted for, and/or swollen lymph nodes, as these symptoms could be indicative of blood or oncological conditions requiring further evaluation.
Common diagnostic testing recommendations may include a complete blood count (CBC) with or without a peripheral blood smear, as well as a bone marrow biopsy. You may also be recommended for genetic and/or molecular tests, flow cytometry, and imaging tests such as CT, MRI, or PET scans to help diagnose, evaluate, and/or stage hematologic cancers.
Treatment options available include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, blood transfusions, stem cell/bone marrow transplantation, and palliative care to alleviate symptoms and maximise quality of life.
