What does a gynecologist do?

A gynecologist is a specialist in women’s reproductive health. They care for the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and breasts. They provide a variety of services which include check-ups, diagnosing and treating gynecological disease, providing infertility treatment, prenatal care, counselling during menopause, and preventive screenings.

When should I see a gynecologist?

Can a gynecologist assist with pregnancy and delivery?

Yes, a gynecologist (especially OB-GYNs) can assist with routine prenatal care, monitor fetal development, manage high-risk pregnancies, perform deliveries (including Cesarean sections), and manage postpartum complications.

Are gynecological visits painful or uncomfortable?

Most visits involve routine care and are at most minimally uncomfortable. Procedures such as Pap smears or ultrasounds are generally painless at the time of the exam, and surgical procedures will typically require anesthesia.
