A General Physician (GP) is a type of medical doctor who provides primary care for numerous health problems, including chronic conditions, infections, lifestyle-related illnesses, and preventative services. They will diagnose and treat patients of all ages.

Visit your GP for a health check-up, to manage uncomplicated illnesses such as a cold, fever, or infection, as well as for chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension) and preventive care, and to receive referrals to other specialists.

A GP, such as wound care, minor surgery, immunisation, blood testing, and health screening can perform some procedures. Generally, more significant medical procedures require a referral to a specialist, who will perform the actual procedure.

Adults should have annual, routine visits for check-ups. Those with chronic illnesses may need to see their GP more frequently, as advised by their doctor.

A GP provides general, primary care. They provide overall healthcare management for patients. Specialists provide care for a specific organ, problem or disease (for example, cardiologist or neurologist). The GPs will coordinate care and refer to a specialist as needed.
