Dr. Himender Makker

• Dr Himender Makker is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine with extensive experience in both NHS and private practice.
• He previously served as an NHS Consultant at University College London Hospitals and North Middlesex University Hospital from July 1997 to July 2024.
• He has specialist expertise in the management of lung cancer, sleep-disordered breathing, and complex asthma, including obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, brittle asthma, and occupational asthma.
• He provides comprehensive sleep study services, develops protocols for managing sleep disorders, and delivers specialised training through sleep medicine courses.
• Dr Makker has led busy lung cancer services since 1997, contributed to national lung cancer audits, clinical trials, and published extensively, including books and book chapters on lung cancer and sleep medicine.
• He has also supervised MSc and MD research projects, particularly on neuropsychological impairment in sleep apnoea, and conducted research on the mechanisms of exercise-induced asthma during his DM thesis at the University of Southampton.
• He has served on numerous committees, including the NICE Specialist Committee for home testing devices for obstructive sleep apnoea, the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Ethics Committee, and the American Thoracic Society peer review subcommittee.
• Additionally, he has served as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians, the Malta Medical School, and the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada.
• Dr Makker has held academic and leadership positions, including Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL, Associate Professor at St. George’s Undergraduate Medical School (Granada), and Director of Research and Development at North Middlesex University Hospital.
• He is widely recognised for his research, publications, and contributions to advancing respiratory and sleep medicine, including post-COVID care services.
