Total Colectomy is a major colorectal operation that removes the entire colon while preserving the rectum when clinically appropriate. Depending on the underlying condition, it may be performed to treat extensive inflammatory bowel disease, hereditary colon disorders, or selected severe colonic diseases. Following removal of the colon, intestinal continuity may be restored by connecting the ileum to the rectum, or stool may be diverted through an ileostomy. The surgical approach and reconstruction plan are determined by the disease, previous operations, bowel function, and overall health. Follow-up care focuses on wound healing, bowel function, hydration, nutrition, and adjustment to any stoma if present.
