Impella is a temporary heart pump used to support circulation when the heart's pumping ability is significantly reduced. The catheter-mounted device is positioned across the aortic valve so that it can transfer blood from the left ventricle into the aorta. Depending on the patient's condition, it may be used to support the heart during high-risk coronary procedures or provide temporary assistance in cardiogenic shock.
