Impella is a temporary mechanical circulatory support system that uses a small catheter-mounted pump to assist the heart in moving blood from the left ventricle into the aorta. It may be used in selected patients experiencing cardiogenic shock or during certain high-risk coronary interventions where additional circulatory support is needed. The device is inserted through a blood vessel and positioned inside the heart under imaging guidance. Patients require close monitoring while the device is in place.
