Vasectomy is performed to provide long-term, permanent contraception for men who are certain they do not want future biological children. By closing or interrupting the vas deferens, the procedure prevents sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. It does not stop sperm production or generally alter male hormone levels. Patients may require a short recovery period and should attend follow-up semen testing, as sterility is not immediate after the procedure.
