Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), also known as Speech Therapists, are healthcare professionals dedicated to evaluating, diagnosing, and treating speech, language, voice, communication, and swallowing disorders. They work with patients of all ages — from a child with a developmental delay to an adult recovering from a stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition.
SLPs develop treatment plans tailored to the patient's needs to help improve speech intelligibility, understanding of language, fluency, and use of social communication. Some SLPs work with patients who have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) to facilitate safe and effective eating. SLPs play an essential role in developing confidence, improving quality of life, and supporting meaningful participation in communication and daily life.
Language therapy is designed to improve an individual’s understanding and expression of the language. The language may be spoken, written, or nonverbal; approaches will include developing vocabulary, grammar, and sentence comprehension skills. Language therapy is often used with children with developmental delays or adults with aphasia due to brain injury or stroke, improving the individuals’ communication and confidence in their language skills.
Addressing disorders of stuttering and fluency is the primary focus of fluency therapy, and the goal is to improve rhythm, flow, and speech patterns. Techniques such as controlled breathing, relaxation, and pacing provide a tremendous experience for more fluent speech and communication. It will also help reduce anxiety when speaking in social or professional contexts.
Voice therapy focuses on improving overall tone, quality, and pitch for individuals experiencing strain to the vocal cords, paralysis, or misuse. Therapy will include exercises for better breath control, resonance, and vocal strength, thus providing a more transparent and more sustainable voice for speaking or professional purposes.
Assists patients with communication challenges due to brain injury, dementia, or neurological problems. It aims to target attention, memory, organisation, and problem-solving to improve day-to-day communication skills and social communicative skills.
Helps individuals who have difficulty swallowing due to stroke, surgery, or a neuromuscular disorder. They teach safe swallowing techniques, employ diet modifications, and encourage oral muscle strengthening to decrease the risk of choking and maximise nutrition and overall quality of life.
This is specifically for children who have speech, language, or developmental disorders. It may include children with autism or Down syndrome. The therapy uses play-based and interactive techniques to improve children's articulation, understanding, and social communication skills while supporting their learning and emotional growth.
