Recovery

Recovery is an important part of healing after undergoing a liver transplant procedure. Your overall wellness depends on a healthy recovery post-surgery. Various parameters of the surgery determine the speed of recovery. It is normal and very common for patients to feel weak, exhausted and uncomfortable afterwards. Surgery can also be physically and emotionally exhausting, even if the pain is under control, and therefore needs the right post-operative care with the guidance of trained and certified experts.

Key stages of Recovery

Liver transplant surgery is a major and a complex procedure that requires a lot of care and precautions afterward. A lot of care under the guidance of medical professionals is required to make sure that the patient is recovering well and the foreign organ has been accepted well by the patient.

Stage 1: Until 3 weeks

  • The initial 3 weeks after a Liver transplant are extremely crucial for you and you will be recovering during this time in a hospital setting.
  • This is the stage when you are most prone to infections and/or post-surgical complications. Therefore, during hospitalization, the doctor keeps an eye on any signs of rejection or any other complications that may possibly arise.
  • You are expected to receive a higher dose of immunosuppressive medicines to reduce the risks of organ rejection.
  • You will initially be on a liquid diet post-operatively and slowly shift to semi-solid and then solid food items.
  • Post-operative tests to measure the blood cell count, liver enzymes and liver function are conducted daily to gauge improvement in clinical status.

Stage 2: Up to 3 months

  • After 3 weeks, you will be discharged from the hospital. However, the schedule for the post-operative tests and their follow-ups with the transplant team continues.
  • You should remain attentive towards some primary indicators of liver rejection, including a fever of 38°C or higher, chills, pain, lethargy, headaches or flu-like symptoms, inflammation or discomfort in the abdomen, vomiting and nausea, breathlessness, and itching.
  • The dosage of anti-rejection medicines is adjusted according to the results of the blood test results.
  • At this stage, you should not lift any heavy weights or run/walk fast during this time.
  • A radiological scan is performed at this stage to confirm that the donor liver has adjusted well and there are no signs of inflammation, infection or fluid accumulation.
  • The recovery can be slow at this stage and is a process that takes its own time to complete before the patient can lead a normal life. This can make you anxious and therefore, it is important that you speak and communicate how you feel.

Stage 3: Up to 6 months

  • At this stage, you are expected to be on track with respect to the recovery phase and would have resumed all normal activities associated with your daily routine.
  • While you are definitely healthier by now, your liver is still growing to its maximum capacity, a process which may take up to a year or more.
  • You may be advised to undergo a routine blood test examination as well as other radiology examinations and follow-up with the specialist. Additionally, you should keep taking immunosuppressants as advised.
  • A collaboration with the treating surgeon and nutritionist is required to lead a healthy life ahead. At this point, the follow-up frequency with the doctor may reduce to once every 3 months and eventually to once every 6 months.

Patients recovering from Liver transplant require continuous guidance, support and coaching to ensure they remain positive psychologically. Even though home care services are absolutely essential for immobile and critical patients who need physical assistance and 24x7 care and monitoring, the role of virtual care services cannot be ignored in providing them with mental and psychological support, in addition to clinical follow-ups regarding their treatment progress.

In fact, virtual care services are also proven to be beneficial for patients who just had some form of surgery or treatment done. They may be completely mobile, independent and not in the need of home-care services, but the incidence of post-anaesthetic and post-operative psychosis in them is significant, especially in the geriatric population. This is where the role of virtual care services come into play.

Fact:Postoperative delirium is a quintessential geriatric complication (Inouyeetal2007). The incidence ranges from 9% to 87% depending on both the patient population and the degree of operative stress (DemeureandFain2006).

Moreover, virtual care services are about accessing the medical specialists from different areas of specialization to help you and guide you at every step of your recovery which cannot be fulfilled and delivered by the home care services for patients recovering from Liver transplant.

With our years of experience in assisting patients, it has been our objective to offer the right blend of care services to our patients for assured recovery under the guidance of top medical specialists. A broader overview of value-based Virtual care delivery over Homecare Services.
