Recovery

After brain surgery, recovery can take longer depending on factors like age, procedure used for tumor removal, affected area of the brain, and overall health of the patient. Typically, the patient will feel out of sorts, different and lack their level of energy. Healing requires lots of rest and expert care. It is necessary to follow the care chart of your surgeon. Probably the most important parameters in the recovery of patients who have undergone brain tumor surgery are rest, timely intake of medications and rehabilitation exercises. It is common for the patient to feel extremely exhausted and weak after going through the removal of a brain tumor from surgical intervention. A brain tumor surgery aftercare package for adults is specially curated by our team to guide you to recover completely and heal fully. The overall recovery can be achieved under the post-operative care and guidance of specialized experts.

Key stages of Recovery

Brain surgery is a serious procedure that needs to be dealt with under the care of specialists. Attention has to be paid to a lot of medical parameters to ensure patients are recovering well under the guidance of the experts. We have determined some of the key stages for the patients who have undergone brain tumor surgery to recover right post-surgery.

Stage 1: Until 3 weeks

    • You will be kept in the hospital under the care of doctors and experts for 9-10 days post-surgery.
    • You will be kept on an intravenous line to give you enough fluids and medicines such as antibiotics and painkillers.
    • Heart rate and oxygen saturation will be monitored using various sensors.
    • An arterial line can be used to draw blood samples as well as check blood pressure.
    • A urinary catheter is placed into the bladder to drain urine. After one day, the catheter is removed.
    • Because of the swelling following the procedure, the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in your brain may be disrupted. A temporary tube (EVD) may be used to drain fluid from the brain's ventricles to a bag outside the body.
    • This is the stage when you are most prone to infections and/or post-surgical complications as the body is weak and low on immunity.
    • You will be kept in special wards where noise is controlled.
    • You will be discharged from the hospital after you are medically stable, have no external discharge from the brain, and are able to eat and walk by yourself but must revisit for scheduled follow up sessions.

Stage 2: Up to 3 months

  • You will need rehabilitation care at this point under the guidance of experts. This includes walking, neck, and balance exercises.
  • The first follow-up is after 6-8 weeks. A series of blood tests and other pathological tests are conducted to check the status of the brain post-surgery and avoid any side effects and infections.
  • You are expected to keep the point of the incision clean.
  • You should remain attentive towards some primary indicators of infections or post-surgical complications such as fever, redness or swelling along the surgical incision, fluid coming from the incision, headaches, vomiting.
  • Taking a balanced diet is a determinant of fast recovery. A nutritionist can help build a diet plan for you with all the right nutrition and water intake requirements.

Stage 3: Up to 6 months

  • At this stage, you will have to go through multiple therapies or treatment modalities.
  • Based on the radiological tests and blood test results, a few sessions of chemotherapy or radiation may be recommended by the doctor at this stage to remove any residual tumors.
  • Medications and antibiotics doses must be increased or reduced based on the signs of infections or any other complications.
  • Follow-up care includes lifestyle changes that will involve neck exercises, balance therapies, etc.
  • A collaboration with the treating surgeon and nutritionist is required to lead a healthy life ahead. At this point, the follow-up frequency with the doctor may reduce to once every 3 months and eventually to once every 6 months.

Patients diagnosed with and/or recovering from Brain tumor require continuous guidance, support and coaching to ensure they remain positive psychologically. Even though home care services are absolutely essential for immobile and critical patients who need physical assistance and 24x7 care and monitoring, the role of virtual care services cannot be ignored in providing them with mental and psychological support, in addition to clinical follow-ups regarding their treatment progress.

In fact, virtual care services are also proven to be beneficial for patients who just had some form of surgery or treatment done. They may be completely mobile, independent and not in the need of home-care services, but the incidence of post-anaesthetic and post-operative psychosis in them is significant, especially in the geriatric population. This is where the role of virtual care services come into play.

Fact:Postoperative delirium is a quintessential geriatric complication (Inouyeetal2007). The incidence ranges from 9% to 87% depending on both the patient population and the degree of operative stress (DemeureandFain2006).

Moreover, virtual care services are about accessing the medical specialists from different areas of specialization to help you and guide you at every step of your recovery which cannot be fulfilled and delivered by the home care services for patients recovering from a Brain tumor.

With our years of experience in assisting patients, it has been our objective to offer the right blend of care services to our patients for assured recovery under the guidance of top medical specialists. A broader overview of value-based Virtual care delivery over Homecare Services
