TIAs (transient ischemic attacks), commonly referred to as “mini-strokes,” temporarily obstruct or limit blood flow to part of the brain, producing symptoms similar to those of a stroke that go away within minutes to hours without causing permanent injury. TIAs are an important indication of future stroke risk and may be caused by blood clots, narrowing of arteries, heart disease, or disorders of the vascular system. Possible symptoms of a TIA include sudden weakness or numbness in one side of the body, difficulty with speech, changes in vision, dizziness, and loss of balance. The diagnosis of a TIA usually includes a physical and neurological examination, CT scans, MRI, vascular imaging, cardiac testing, and blood tests to determine the cause and risk of stroke.
