Timely diagnosis through advanced diagnostic testing is critical to begin intervention to prevent long-term effects of the stroke from occurring and to reduce the degree of damage caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain. Emergency interventions to restore blood flow to the damaged part of the brain (clot removal), thrombolytic therapy (clot-busting), and surgical intervention can only be achieved if the diagnosis of stroke is made early in the patient’s care. The use of a multidisciplinary team approach to stroke management will improve patient survival, recovery, and long-term neurological outcomes.
