Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune liver disease that slowly affects the small bile ducts inside the liver by damaging the cells that line these bile ducts. Bile flow becomes obstructed, leading to damage to the liver's cellular structure and the development of scar tissue and ultimately may lead to cirrhosis if left untreated. While many patients experience symptoms of PBC (fatigue, itching, dry eyes and dry mouth; jaundice and abdominal discomfort) during the early stages of their disease, some may not have any symptoms at all.
