Pityriasis Versicolor, also known as Tinea Versicolor, is a common superficial fungal skin infection caused by the overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which normally lives on the skin. The condition leads to discoloured patches that may appear lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, commonly affecting the chest, back, neck, shoulders, or upper arms. The patches may be mildly itchy, dry, or scaly and often become more noticeable after sun exposure. Warm climates, excessive sweating, oily skin, hormonal changes, and weakened immunity can increase the risk of developing the condition. Although not dangerous, pityriasis versicolor may recur frequently without proper treatment and skin care.
