Eclampsia is a rare but life-threatening complication of pregnancy characterised by the occurrence of seizures in women with pre-eclampsia. It usually develops during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth and is associated with severe hypertension and dysfunction of multiple organs. Symptoms that may precede seizures include persistent headaches, blurred vision, confusion, upper abdominal pain, and swelling. Because eclampsia can rapidly endanger both maternal and fetal health, it is considered a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.
