Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is considered a rare and serious gastrointestinal motility disorder. In CIPO, the intestines will act as if they are blocked when, in fact, they are not truly obstructed (obstruction refers to an actual physical blockage). CIPO occurs as a result of dysfunction of the nerves and/or muscles that control the movement of the intestines. Symptoms of CIPO can include severe abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, constipation, malnutrition, and problems with digesting food. The diagnosis of CIPO generally requires extensive testing, including endoscopic examination, imaging studies, motility evaluation, laboratory testing, and evaluation of intestinal function. Detecting CIPO early in the disease process is important to minimise the likelihood of nutritional deficits, repeated hospital admissions, and long-term complications.
