A biliary stricture refers to the narrowing of the bile duct, the passageway through which bile flows from the liver to the intestines. This abnormal narrowing may prevent the normal flow of bile, or slow the normal flow of bile. Factors which may cause biliary strictures include gallstones, inflammation, prior surgical procedures, pancreatitis, liver disease, or tumors impacting the biliary ducts. Symptoms of a biliary stricture may include the following: jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal pain, fever, itching, dark-colored urine, pale-colored stool, and recurrent infections. Tests that may help to identify a biliary stricture include blood tests, liver function studies,MRCP, CT scan, ERCP, and EUS.
