Recovery

Recovery is a key stage in the overall wellness of cancer patients. The surgery undergone determines the speed of recovery. However, no matter what type of cancer surgery a patient has to endure, they will most likely feel exhausted and drained afterwards. Surgery can be physically and emotionally exhausting, even if the pain is under control and therefore needs the right post-operative care from highly specialized experts.

Key stages of Recovery

Cancer care is for life. Patients after the surgical intervention are required to pay attention to a lot of medical parameters to ensure they are recovering well under the guidance of the experts. We have determined some of the key stages for the cancer patients to recover right.

Stage 1: Until 3 weeks

  • This is the stage when you are most prone to infections and/or post-surgical complications. Therefore you need to take care of the surgery site and follow the instructions related to wound care.
  • Any noticeable signs of infection such as redness, pain, soreness, fever, and/or inflammation should not be ignored and immediately needs to be brought to the attention of the treating oncologist.
  • Physical rehabilitation forms an important part of initial recovery in case of certain onco surgeries. Therefore, instructions should be carefully followed for the effective mobilization of affected muscles.
  • The oncologists may prescribe a few routine tests and physical examinations along with a course of antibiotics and other medications, which must be followed as prescribed.

Stage 2: Up to 3 months

  • Onco-surgery patients are most likely to start with additional treatment such as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to conclude their treatment. So at this stage of recovery, you are most likely to be in the next phase of your treatment.
  • The decision to start with the next course of treatment is based on the evaluation performed after almost a month of your surgery. You are expected to undergo a series of blood tests and radiographic scans (CT/MRI) to check for residual tumors.
  • While you are undergoing further treatment, certain tests need to be done routinely to check for the physiological changes and accordingly adjust the treatment schedule/medicine dosage.
  • For example, you are expected to undergo a complete blood count (CBC) test before and after every chemotherapy cycle to check for any significant reduction in white blood cells that may put you at risk of infections.
  • At this stage of recovery, you are expected to be dealing with a lot of specialists, including an oncologist, nutritionist, rehabilitation specialist and psychologist to help you sail through the treatment process comfortably.

Stage 3: Up to 6 months

    • At this stage, you are already nearing the conclusion of your entire course of treatment, which may involve multiple therapies or treatment modalities.
    • You may be advised to undergo a routine blood test examination as well as a full-body scan to check for any traces of residual cancer.
    • The side effects of chemotherapy/ radiation therapy start to wear off by this time.
    • Follow-up care and instructions related to checking for small signs of cancer recurrence need to be taken care of starting at this stage.
    • A collaboration with the treating medical oncologist and nutritionist is required to lead a cancer-free and healthy life ahead. At this point, the follow-up frequency with the oncologist may reduce to once every 3 months and eventually to once every 6 months.

Patients diagnosed with and/or recovering from Cancer require continuous guidance, support and coaching to ensure they remain positive psychologically. Even though home care services are absolutely essential for immobile and critical patients who need physical assistance and 24x7 care and monitoring, the role of virtual care services cannot be ignored in providing them with mental and psychological support, in addition to clinical follow-ups regarding their treatment progress.

In fact, virtual care services are also proven to be beneficial for patients who just had some form of surgery or treatment done. They may be completely mobile, independent and not in the need of home-care services, but the incidence of post-anaesthetic and post-operative psychosis in them is significant, especially in the geriatric population. This is where the role of virtual care services come into play.

Fact:Postoperative delirium is a quintessential geriatric complication (Inouyeetal2007). The incidence ranges from 9% to 87% depending on both the patient population and the degree of operative stress (DemeureandFain2006).

Moreover, virtual care services are about accessing the medical specialists from different areas of specialization to help you and guide you at every step of your recovery which cannot be fulfilled and delivered by the home care services for patients recovering from Cancer.

With our years of experience in assisting patients, it has been our objective to offer the right blend of care services to our patients for assured recovery under the guidance of top medical specialists. A broader overview of value-based Virtual care delivery over Homecare Services.
