Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a spinal fusion surgery procedure, performed to stabilize the spinal vertebrae and the disc or shock the absorber between the vertebrae. This surgery aims to lessen the pain and the nerve irritation. It is commonly recommended in conditions like spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease or recurrent disc herniation. TLIF surgery can be done through a traditional open incision or a minimally invasive procedure; this will depend on the patient's state.

The method is performed under general anesthesia, and the patient needs to stay in the hospital for 3-5 days after the surgery. The surgery makes use of the posterior approach; an incision is formed in the lower back of the spine bones. The incisions length depends on the method used. Surgical hardware is applied to the spine, which will enhance the fusion rate.

Patients should limit their physical activities, for the first several weeks after the surgery and gradually increase their activity. Patients are prescribed pain medications to get relief from the pain.
