Pinnaplasty or commonly referred to as ear surgery is a procedure performed to improve the shape, position, and proportion of the ear. The method helps in correcting a congenital disability in the ear structure that has become apparent with development, or it can treat ears deformity that is caused by injury. Surgery helps in generating a more natural shape, bringing a balance and proportion to the ears and face. Recommended in case of:
Macrotia: It is a condition with overly large ears
Protruding ears that occur on both sides in varying degrees
Adult dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery
Surgery performed in general anaesthesia (used in case of children) or local anaesthesia with sedation. And can take about 2-4 hour depending on the plan of the surgery. The standard incision techniques used are:
A small incision is made in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. After which the cartilage is sculpted and bend toward the head. Removable sutures are used, they will help in maintaining the new shape.
A much smaller incision is made at the back of the ear and skin is removed. Stitched are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear, without removing the cartilage.
In most of the case, ear surgery can leave a faint scar at the back of the ear, that will fade with time. Most of the patients can get back to their daily routine within 5-7 days after the procedure.
