This is a safe procedure but as with any surgery there are certain risks or complications involved. These are anesthesia risks, bleeding or hematoma formation, breast asymmetry, breast contour and shape irregularities, nipple or breast sensation changes (temporary or permanent), deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, fat necrosis, fluid accumulation, infection, incisions heal poorly, revisional surgery possibility, potential partial or total loss of nipple and areola. The recovery time for Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is 6 weeks following surgery. After this time the majority of bruising and swelling in the breasts has subsided. Majority of the patients are allowed to exercise freely, sleep on their stomachs and sides, and wear an underwire bra. However, it is recommended that you wait two weeks before flying. You should consult your surgeon before taking a flight after surgery to return home.
For around two weeks, your breasts will remain bruised and swollen. For some months, you might experience pain and soreness surrounding the incisions. Take pain medicine as directed by your doctor in the days following your breast lift. Avoid bending, lifting, and straining. To relieve pressure on your breasts, sleep on your back or side.
After the breast lift, wait at least one to two weeks before engaging in sexual activity. When it's safe to resume daily activities like washing your hair, showering, or bathing, consult your doctor. Discuss when or if your stitches will be removed, with your doctor. Some stitches are self-dissolving. Others need to be removed one to two weeks following the surgery in the doctor's office.
Wear a surgical support bra all day and night for three or four days. For the next three to four weeks, you'll wear a soft support bra. To speed up healing, your doctor may recommend applying silicone tape or gel on your incisions. Keep your breasts away from the sun while you're recuperating. After that, keep your incisions protected from the sun.
